The Yorktown class aircraft carrier known as the Big E – the seventh U.S. Navy ship to be named Enterprise – earned twenty battle stars and was the most decorated naval ship of World War II. James V. Forrestal, Secretary of the Navy 1944-47, stated the USS Enterprise was “The one ship that most nearly symbolizes the history of the United States Navy in World War II.” The ship was scrapped in 1958. River Vale resident Henry Hoffmann, the engineer responsible for dismantling the ship, saved the stern plate and donated it to the Township in 1959. On Dec. 9, 2000, a dedication ceremony was held for the stern plate at the park. The River Vale Free Public Library is the repository of numerous USS Enterprise artifacts including five log books and the ship’s flag.
