210511-N-FF208-001 GROTON, Conn. Vice Adm. Daryl Caudle, Commander, U.S. Submarine Forces, center, receives a demo of the Naval Submarine Medicine Research Laboratory’s (NSMRL) Hyperbaric Neurocognitive Assessment System (HNAS) from Dr. Justin Handy, right, while Capt. Katharine Shobe, commanding officer, NSMRL, looks on, onboard Naval Submarine Base New London, May 11. The HNAS combines an Android-based tablet in a rugged, waterproof housing with an NSMRL-developed neurocognitive assessment software program. It is field deployable and rated for depths up to 150 meters, and can be used to test, in real time, how different conditions brought on by diving (cold stress, nitrogen narcosis, and oxygen toxicity) impact divers’ abilities to think and perform tasks. Caudle’s trip was focused on the submarine force mission and included engagement with major commanders and submarine crews, observation of undersea warfare training evolutions, and a tour of the submarine base’s facilities.
