BABADAG, Romania —Petroleum supply specialists with the 3-1 Attack Helicopter Battalion refuel an UH-60 Black Hawk during a multinational air assault exercise with the Dutch 11th Air Assault Brigade here, May 14. Large-scale movement of troops and equipment has been a key focal point for DEFENDER-Europe 21 in the Black Sea Region. The security of NATO’s Eastern flank as well as that of sovereign nations in the region is contingent upon the ability to deter potential adversaries.
DEFENDER-Europe 21 is a large-scale U.S. Army-led exercise designed to build readiness and interoperability between the U.S., NATO allies and partner militaries. This year, more than 28,000 multinational forces from 26 nations will conduct nearly simultaneous operations across more than 30 training areas in 14 countries from the Baltics to the strategically important Balkans and Black Sea Region.
