GULF OF TADJOURA (May 8, 2021) U.S. Navy Boatswain's Mate 2nd Class Jonghyun Lee, from Buenos
Aires, Argentina, assigned to Maritime Expeditionary Security Squadron Eleven (MESRON-11), loads
ammunition into a M2 machine gun during a live-fire sustainment training conducted off the coast of
Arta Range, May 08, 2021. In order to keep their gun qualifications, once every six months, crew
members are required to hit a target from 300 yards out while idling on the 34-foot Dauntless-class
patrol boat.
The Maritime Expeditionary Security Forces protect U.S. ships around the clock in port, or while
transiting into harbors around the world. MESRON-11 is stationed at Camp Lemonnier and covers traffic
in and around the Port of Djibouti.
As per the SECNAV Memo of 4 March 2021, the use of masks aboard the patrol boats is relaxed due to
the high-risk nature of operations, specifically in this photo the need for clear, audible and unrestricted
visualization of verbal communication required for safe and effective operations. (U.S. Navy photo by
