    SAN DIEGO (May 14, 2021) Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Christina Fonseca (ret.) gives remarks during a retirement ceremony held at Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) San Diego May 14. Her husband, Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Luis Fonseca, was the Navy’s most decorated active duty hospital corpsman, and received the Navy Cross as a hospitalman apprentice for extraordinary heroism while serving with the First Marine Expeditionary Force in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom Mar. 23, 2003. Fonseca and his wife retired together in a joint ceremony, and have a combined 46 years of Naval service. Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Command (NMRTC) San Diego's mission is to prepare service members to deploy in support of operational forces, deliver high quality healthcare services and shape the future of military medicine through education, training and research. NMRTC employs more than 6,000 active duty military personnel, civilians, and contractors in Southern California to provide patients with world-class care anytime, anywhere.
