U.S. Air Force Brig. Gen. Caroline Miller, 502nd Air Base Wing and Joint Base San Antonio commander, presents opening remarks during the retreat ceremony for National Police Week, May 14, 2021, at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas. In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. Decades later, the event, more commonly known as National Police Week, has grown to a series of events which attracts thousands of survivors and law enforcement officers to our Nation's Capital each year. National Police Week honors those who have sworn to protect and defend. The event pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others. (U.S. Air Force photo by Sarayuth Pinthong)
