U.S. Air Force Brig. Gen. Caroline Miller (left), 502nd Air Base Wing and Joint Base San Antonio commander, returns a salute after receiving the Carry the Fallen baton from Master Sgt. Rufus Dixon, 802nd Security Forces Squadron, at the retreat ceremony for National Police Week, May 14, 2021, at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas. The baton was put in motion at 0001, on May 8, at JBSA-Fort Sam Houston. The event was designed to carry the burden and never forget the ultimate sacrifices made by Defenders, Police Officers and those who died in the line of duty. Volunteers will give one hour of their time to keep the representation of a Fallen Members in motion to showcase that we will carry on their duties and dedication.
In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. Decades later, the event, more commonly known as National Police Week, has grown to a series of events which attracts thousands of survivors and law enforcement officers to our Nation's Capital each year. National Police Week honors those who have sworn to protect and defend. (U.S. Air Force photo by Sarayuth Pinthong)
