Air Force Maj. Gen. James Eifert (right), Florida National Guard adjutant general, signs the guest book while touring the Prisoner of War Camps Museum at the site of Stalag Luft III during a command visit to soldiers deployed with the 50th Regional Support Group (RSG) in Zagan, Poland, on May 16, 2021. This museum preserves the memory of the “Great Escape” of 1944 during World War II. The plan for the “Great Escape” called for a maximum of 200 Allied prisoners of war to break free from Stalag Luft III, but only 76 airmen escaped, and of those, only three avoided recapture by German forces.
