Chief Petty Officer Joseph Childers salutes as he is “piped aboard” during a Chief Petty Officer Pinning Ceremony aboard Camp Leatherneck, Afghanistan, Sept. 14, 2012. Childers was one of six first class petty officers to be appointed the rank of chief that day. Being “piped aboard” is when a Boatswain’s mates whistle is blown in recognition of the chief selectees arriving as chief petty officers.
