Non-native and the invasive water hyacinth outcompetes native aquatic plants on Lake Okeechobee, Fl. The water hyacinth is an aquatic invasive species that was introduced to the United States from South America over 100 years ago at the World’s Fair. It is a major detriment to flood risk management infrastructure. The Jacksonville District Invasive Species Management Branch utilizes Integrated Pest Management (IPM) to manage invasive species. IPM is the coordinated use of the most appropriate strategy to prevent or reduce unacceptable levels of invasive species and their damage by the most economical means, and with the least possible hazard to people, property and the environment.
