Battery 219 at the Navesink Military Reservation, located in Hartshorne Woods Park at Highlands, N.J., May 13, 2021. The World War II coastal gun battery comprised two 6-inch M1903-A2 rapid fire guns mounted on M1 Shielded Barbette Carriages placed in front of an earth covered concrete, steel-reinforced structure. The guns fired 105-pound armor-piercing projectiles with a range of more than 15 miles at a rate of fire of five rounds per minute. In 1953 the Navesink Military Reservation became the Highlands Air Force Station providing radar coverage. From 1966 to its decommissioning in 1974, the Highlands Army Air Defense Site directed all the New York Defense Area Nike surface-to-air missile sites.
