U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. Carrie Nguyen, a recruiter with Recruiting Sub-Station Westminster, Recruiting Station Orange County, expresses her passion for her culture during an interview in Santa Ana, California on May 21, 2021. “We, as Vietnamese people, are proud of our identity and culture. Our motivation is driven by looking back on how far we’ve gone and anticipating what lies ahead of us. Similarly, the Marine Corps gives us the opportunity to become the best version of ourselves and leave a legacy behind for those to follow,” says Nguyen. “The Marine Corps is already the smallest U.S. Military branch and there are even fewer women in the Marine Corps. And above it all, it is the rarest to have female, Vietnamese Marines. Intertwining both aspects of my life, sets an example and paves the way for future Asian Americans to follow, especially to those that need our guidance in taking the first step. I am proud of the fact that I have earned the title United States Marine, but I am most proud that I am a female, Vietnamese American Marine.” This month we celebrate and recognize Asian American and Pacific Islander American’s for their contributions to history, culture, and achievements of the United States.
