U.S. Air Force airmen from the 49th and 849th Aircraft Maintenance Squadrons and members of the German Air Force Flying Training Center 2nd Maintenance Line lift a Tornado off the ground during a joint crash-recovery exercise of Holloman Air Force Base, N.M., Sept. 14. While previous exercises were performed with a stripped-down version of the aircraft, the purpose of this exercise was to determine if the joint crash-recovery team had the capability to lift a fully-functional, fully-loaded aircraft off the ground. This capability allows the team, which is on standby 24 hours a day, to move an aircraft during an emergency.
