The 104th Fighter Wing and the Westfield-Barnes Regional Airport hosted a groundbreaking ceremony on May 27, 2021 for the expansion of Taxiway Sierra. The expansion of Taxiway Sierra will increase the number of aircraft the airport can host at one time and facilitate faster and safer aircraft movement. Distinguished visitors and speakers at the event included; Governor Charlie Baker, Lt. Governor Karyn Polito, and Housing and Economic Development Secretary Mike Kennealy joined Congressman Richard Neal, the Adjutant General of the Massachusetts National Guard Maj. Gen. Gary Keefe, the 104FW Vice Commander Col. David ‘Moon’ Halasi-Kun, Westfield Mayor Donald Humason, and state and local leaders. Baker stated his support for the project at the 104FW. The Westfield-Barnes Regional Airport, Barnes Air National Guard Base is home to 104th Fighter Wing, the regional airport, Army Aviation Support Facility #2, and a Gulfstream facility. The project was funded by a $4.7 million allocation from the Commonwealth’s 2014 Military Bond Bill authorization. (U.S Air National Guard Photos by Master Sgt. Lindsey S. Watson)
