Brig. Gen. Tara McKennie embraces Mrs. Armestine Graham following her promotion to the rank of brigadier general at the Alabama National Guard's 187th Fighter Wing, home of the Red Tails. When Mrs. Graham enlisted with two of her friends in 1972, they became the first three Black females in the country to enlist in the Air National Guard. Mrs. Graham was thanked during the promotion ceremony for her trailblazing courage.
Brig. Gen. McKennie made history as the first female general officer in the Alabama Air National Guard and the first Black female general officer in either component of the Alabama National Guard.
