Recruits are required to do a 10-second gear strip while submerged in shallow water. The must wear a flak jacket, Kevlar helmet and carry a simulated M16-A4 service rifle and take it all off while being under water. They do this because it gives recruits an idea of what it feels like to carry all that extra weight in the water and allows them to know that they are capable of taking their gear off if they fell in the water.
