NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- (May 28, 2021) Capt. Kenneth Strong, the commanding officer of the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73), awards the Meritorious Service Medal to Cmdr. Leonard Bunch, the assistant reactor officer assigned to the George Washington, during Bunch’s retirement ceremony. Bunch has served 35 years in the Navy, enlisting as a Seaman and working his way to Commander. George Washington is undergoing refueling complex overhaul (RCOH) at Newport News Shipbuilding. RCOH is a multi-year project performed only once during a carrier’s 50-year service life that includes refueling the ship’s two nuclear reactors, as well as significant repairs, upgrades, and modernization
