    31st Marine Expeditionary Unit

U.S. Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Alec Burns, with Battalion Landing Team 3/5, 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), checks blood flow during a live demonstration of a fresh old blood transfusion aboard the amphibious assault ship USS America (LHA 6) June 16, 2021. With the Marine Corps’ continued efforts to transition away from transfusing clear fluids to combat casualties, fresh-whole blood has been introduced to increase survivability of patients. Marines and sailors conducted an integrated demonstration to showcase the capabilities that the 31st MEU brings to the fight. The 31st MEU is operating aboard ships of the America Ready Group in the 7th fleet area of operations to enhance interoperability with allies and partners and serve as a ready response force to defend peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region. Burns is a native of Woodridge, Illinois. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Cpl. Karis Mattingly)
