    31st Marine Expeditionary Unit

U.S. Marine Corps Cpl. Jacobbie Gatewood, a combat engineer attached to Battalion Landing Team 3/5, 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), peers through a laser range finder during an Instrument Set, Reconnaissance and Surveying (ENFIRE) class aboard the amphibious assault ship USS America (LHA 6) in the Philippine Sea, July 6, 2021. Marines utilize the ENFIRE system to conduct engineer reconnaissance and compose real-time products to shape the battle space for maneuver commanders. The 31st MEU is operating aboard ships of the Expeditionary Strike Group 7 in the 7th fleet area of operations to enhance interoperability with allies and partners and serve as a ready response force to defend peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region. Gatewood is a native of North Fort Myers, Florida. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Cpl. Karis Mattingly)
