SAN DIEGO (July 14, 2021) — U.S. Navy Rear Adm. Bruce Gillingham, surgeon general of the Navy, visits USS Makin Island (LHD 8), July, 14. While aboard, Gillingham toured Makin Island medical and dental spaces, which highlighted unique capabilities specific to Makin Island. Gillingham also met with members of the crew and recognized them for their accomplishments supporting health care. His visit comes after Makin Island returned from deployment, supporting U.S. 3rd, 5th, 6th, and 7th Fleets. Makin Island is a Wasp-class amphibious assault ship homeported in San Diego.
