U.S. Navy Sailors with Fleet Surgical Team 7 conduct a laparoscopic appendectomy aboard the amphibious assault ship USS America (LHA 6) in the Pacific Ocean, July 10, 2021. In cases of emergency surgeries, USS America provides the same standard of care on ship as off ship with full laparoscopic capabilities at sea. It is imperative that Marines and Sailors are not separated from their units while at sea, especially during times of COVID-19. To mitigate the spread of the virus, those Marines or Sailors who, without USS America’s current medical capabilities, would be separated and therefore unable to finish the rest of the deployment. The ability to keep the fighting force at the same capacity is necessary to stay mission ready. (U.S. Marine Corps Photo by Cpl. Karis Mattingly)
