William Wayne, a Marine corporal who served with Echo Company, 2nd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment during World War II, shares his experiences from the Battle of Iwo Jima with Col. Eugene Apicella, deputy commander of Marine Corps Installations West and Camp Pendleton, and Marines currently serving with Echo Co., 2nd Bn., 5th Marines here, Sept. 25, 2012. While on Camp Pendleton, Wayne toured various camps before visiting 3rd Platoon, Echo Co., his former platoon in Iwo Jima. Four Marines with the modern 3rd Plt., who recently returned from a 7-month tour in Afghanistan, listened to a first-hand account of the famous battle. Afterwards, the Marines presented Wayne a picture of the platoon in Afghanistan and a 2nd Bn., 5th Marines T-shirt before he continued his tour.
