Bronze statues at the New Jersey Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial at Holmdel, N.J., July 7, 2021. The statues represent those who came home, the women who served, and those who did not return. The Memorial, an open-air circular pavilion measuring 200 feet in diameter, was designed by Hien Nguyen, who came to the United States from Vietnam in 1975. It is comprised of 366 eight-foot-tall black granite panels, each representing a day of the year. Casualties are listed on the granite panels on the day they were killed. The May seventh panel, the day the war ended, is oriented toward Vietnam. The Memorial honors the sacrifices made by the 1,562 New Jersey men and one woman who gave their lives while serving in Southeast Asia and, at the same time, pays tribute to all who have served.
