U.S. Marine Corps Cpl. Peter Chang, a Meteorology and Oceanography (METOC) Analyst Forecaster with 3rd Intelligence Battalion, III MEF Information Group (MIG) participates in a Battlespace Surveillance Company Field Exercise (BSCFEX) on Camp Hansen, Okinawa, Japan, Aug. 12, 2021. Chang is a Queens, N.Y. native.
"Weather is important, no matter where you are in the world. Our abilities give Marines an edge in being able to make smarter tactical decisions on the ground as well as in the air and sea. We're essential to aiding Marines in austere environments because we have the ability to provide them with accurate information, despite having limited data resources. Our capability gives commanders a more accurate scope of the battleground and helps them navigate making tactical decisions.”
Both METOC and Ground Sensor Platoon Marines utilized the exercise to evaluate training requirements and conducted force on force training evolutions. BSCFEX enabled III MIG Marines to remain an asset to III Marine Expeditionary Force by maintaining their readiness and lethality while being forward deployed in the Indo-Pacific region.
