New Jersey Youth ChalleNGe Academy cadets participate in a recognition ceremony after completing the two-week acclimation phase at the National Guard Training Center in Sea Girt, N.J., August 13, 2021. During the ceremony, Brig. Gen. Patrick M. Kennedy, Deputy Adjutant General for New Jersey, addressed the cadet candidates, while Academy Director Nelson Ribon coined three candidates for their performance. The acclimation phase orients the cadet candidates to the program’s physical, mental, and social discipline requirements prior to the residential phase of the 22-week program. Congress established the National Guard Youth ChalleNGe Program 1993. New Jersey’s first ChalleNGe class began in September 1994. (New Jersey National Guard photo by Mark C. Olsen)
