U.S. Marine Corps Cpl. John West, a military working dog (MWD) handler and MWD-Dan, 3rd Law Enforcement (LE) Battalion, III MEF Information Group (MIG), board their flight on Kadena Air Force Base, Okinawa, Japan, Aug. 20, 2021. West is a Columbus, Ohio native. Due to the Marine Corps Commandant’s Force Design for 2030 and the deactivation of 3rd LE this October, Smith has chosen to adopt his MWD-Dan as they both depart Okinawa.
“It stinks losing a passion, and friends: your buddy, your dog. The program is still sticking around, and I see the bigger picture, and I know we’ll still be utilized across the Marine Corps.
Having a dog is a unique skill and trait and it involves a lot of time. You have to train with this dog constantly. A lot of work goes into it.”
During their time attached to 3rd LE, the MWDs provided III Marine Expeditionary Force with unmatched deterrence, detection, and threat-engagement capabilities. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Cpl. Sarah Marshall)
