A U.S. Army paratrooper assigned to the 173rd Airborne Brigade prepares to simulate a helicopter rescue at sea with bad weather conditions during the water portion of the aircraft survival certification at Naval Station Rota, Spain on August 5, 2021. The aircraft survival training is designed to instill the self-confidence needed to overcome mental and physical adversity that could arise during an actual downed aircraft over water.
The 173rd Airborne Brigade is the U.S. Army’s Contingency Response Force in Europe, providing rapidly deployable forces to the United States European, Africa and Central Command areas of responsibility. Forward deployable across Italy and Germany, the brigade routinely trains alongside NATO allies and partners to build partnerships and strengthened the alliance.
