    31st Marine Expeditionary Unit

U.S. Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Claudia Murphy, a mortarman with Battalion Landing Team (BLT) 3/5, 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), stretches prior to unit physical training on the flight deck aboard amphibious assault ship USS America (LHA 6), in the Pacific Ocean, July 10, 2021. Murphy is the first female mortarman in 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines, and is one of the now numerous women who have enlisted and joined the infantry community, actively redefining the accustomed Marine in the infantry ranks. Murphy explains that despite the hardship she faced as a female mortarman in the fleet Marine Force, things began looking up. Marines are trained to adapt and overcome, and with patience and an open mind that’s exactly what they continue to strive for. With the Marine Corps’ initiative to integrate women into every MOS, Marines like Murphy will continue to pave the road for female infantry Marines in an environment composed of 99 percent males.
