Members from five branches of the U.S. Armed Forces, the U.S. Navy Ceremonial Band, and the 3d U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) Caisson Platoon conduct a joint full military honors funeral service for former U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld outside of Memorial Chapel, Fort Myer, Virginia, August 23, 2021.
Rumsfeld was Secretary of Defense for Presidents Gerald R. Ford and George W. Bush, as well as a three-term U.S. Congressman from Illinois (1963-1969), director of the Office of Economic Opportunity (1969-1970), U.S Representative to NATO (1973-1974) and the White House Chief of Staff under President Gerald Ford (1974-1975). He served in the U.S. Navy from 1954-1957 as a naval aviator and flight instructor. He transferred to the Naval Reserve in 1957 and then to the Individual Ready Reserve in 1975 when he became Secretary of Defense. Rumsfeld retired from the Naval Reserve with the rank of captain in 1989.
