    Description: Ground Zero dust

Caption: On Sept. 11, 2001, al-Qaida terrorists hijacked four airliners, two of which were flown into the twin towers of the World Trade Center killing 2,753 people. The clouds of dust as the World Trade Center collapsed became a metaphor of the horror of the attack on 9/11. This is a sealed sample of dust collected from “Ground Zero.” However, it also represents a public health threat since the dust contained a variety of toxic substances. Many New York Fire Department rescue workers reported respiratory problems, called the “WTC cough,” after inhaling the dust while rescuing or recovering the victims of the attack. As of 2011, of the 60,270 people at risk from dust inhalation, 18,462 received medical treatment. [M-762 10322] (Disclosure: This image has been cropped to emphasize the subject.)
