Members of the New York National Guard provide security around the perimeter of the still smoldering "rubble pile" at Ground Zero following the attack on the World Trade Center towers in Manhattan, New York, on Sept. 11, 2001. Immediately following the attack, work started on clearing debris in order to stabilize structures as well as search and recovery efforts for survivors and remains with over 14,000 New York National Guardsmen taking part in the response which lasted into 2002.
