Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III visits with U.S. Marines assigned to the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) and soldiers of the 82nd Airborne Divsion at Camp Arifjan, Kuwait, Sept. 8, 2021. The 24th MEU lost 10 Marines and a Sailor and the 82nd had a solider killed in a bombing at Hamid Karzai International Airport, Afghanistan on Aug. 26, 2021. The units were assigned security and were assisting in the evacuation of American citizens and Afghans from the country. Austin in visiting the Gulf states region meeting with regional partners and thanking them for their cooperation with the United States as we evacuated Americans, Afghans and citizens from other nations from Afghanistan. He will reaffirm our strong defense relationships in the region. Secretary Austin will also meet with U.S. service members and U.S. government personnel to thank them for the skill and professionalism with which they conducted the evacuation. (DoD photo by Chad J.
