U.S. Army Pfc. Morris Jones, a Soldier assigned to 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, D Company, offers hand sanitizer to Afghans at Fort Pickett, VA. Taylor works as a guide for the resettlement center. At the resettlement center, families begin their process of integrating into the U.S. and receive guidance on the next steps in the immigration process.
One of the challenges with guiding people to their resettlement appointments is the language barrier between Soldiers and the Afghan guests. Taylor approaches this challenge by using the resources around him – whether it requires coordination with an interpreter, finding another guest who speaks English, or learning some phrases in Pashto and Dari himself. Taylor’s flexibility and commitment to helping others impacts operations at a scale far beyond his level.
Taylor describes his experience in these words: “it’s nice to be helping others who went through something I can’t even imagine.”
The Department of Defense, through U.S. Northern Command, and in support of the Department of Homeland Security, is providing transportation, temporary housing, medical screening, and general support for at least 50,000 Afghan evacuees at suitable facilities, in permanent or temporary structures, as quickly as possible. This initiative provides Afghan personnel essential support at secure locations outside Afghanistan.
