Garrett Wong, 204th Airlift Squadron loadmaster, goes through the sequence of deploying a flare out the back of a C-17 Globemaster III Sept. 8, 2021, at Moffett Federal Airfield, Calif. Deploying flares from the aircraft during flight serves to illuminate the skies in the event of a nighttime rescue operation, such as the squadron's response role in recovering splashed down astronauts.
