Description: Traction Clamp
Caption: This traction clamp was used for the treatment of limb fractures during the early 20th century. On March 31, 1931, an earthquake leveled Managua, Nicaragua. Maj. Paul Hawley, USA-MC, chief surgeon of the Nicaragua Canal Survey, was detailed to assist in the treatment of those injured by collapsed buildings. He commissioned a local blacksmith to make six clamps to provide tension for patients recovering from a limb fracture, ensuring the healed limb was straight. This clamp was removed from the patient after 25 days of use. [M-129.00093] (Disclosure: This image has been cropped to emphasize the subject.)
