U.S. Army Spc. Andrew Pagnozzi, a Soldier assigned to 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, B Company, plays soccer with an Afghan boy in Fort Pickett’s temporary lodging area.
Pagnozzi works in the Mayor Cell at Fort Pickett, where he assists with donation distributions and village management. During his time with Task Force Pickett, Pagnozzi has rotated through several different roles as the population expanded, but says his favorite part has been interacting with the Afghan children. Despite the language barrier, Pagnozzi has formed friendships with some of the Afghan children, and describes how they have taught him valuable lessons of gratitude and hopefulness.
The Department of Defense, through U.S. Northern Command, and in support of the Department of Homeland Security, is providing transportation, temporary housing, medical screening, and general support for at least 50,000 Afghan evacuees at suitable facilities, in permanent or temporary structures, as quickly as possible. This initiative provides Afghan personnel essential support at secure locations outside Afghanistan.
