U.S. Air Force Maj. Kay Nissen, attached to Task Force McCoy plays with an Afghan evacuee at a community center on Fort McCoy, Wisconsin, Sept. 24, 2021, as part of Operation Allies Welcome. Community centers provide games, enrichment, sports, and art supplies for children as well opportunities for mothers such as English classes and sewing machines. The Department of Defense, through U.S. Northern Command, and in support of the Department of Homeland Security, is providing transportation, temporary housing, medical screening, and general support for at least 50,000 Afghan evacuees at suitable facilities, in permanent or temporary structures, as quickly as possible.
