U.S. Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen H. Hicks discusses the current state of operations and facilities during Operation Allies Welcome with Brig. Gen. Richard Harrison, commanding general of Task Force Pickett, on Fort Pickett, Virginia, Oct. 5, 2021. Hicks visited Task Force Pickett for an overview of capacities, capabilities, and projections of Operation Allies Welcome. The Department of Defense, through U.S. Northern Command, and in support of the Department of Homeland Security, is providing transportation, temporary housing, medical screening, and general support for at least 50,000 Afghan evacuees at suitable facilities, in permanent or temporary structures, as quickly as possible.
