NSWC Philadelphia Celebrates U.S. Navy’s 246th Birthday Reflecting on City’s Rich Naval History

By an act approved by the Continental Congress on Oct. 13, 1775, the Naval Committee purchased the ship Black Prince. Renamed Alfred, she was the first continental ship to have a Grand Union Flag raised on board (by Lt. John Paul Jones) at her commissioning in Philadelphia, on Dec. 3, 1775. Artwork by W. Nowland Van Powell. Courtesy of the U.S. Naval Art Gallery Collection.
