By an act approved by the Continental Congress on Oct. 13, 1775, the Naval Committee purchased the ship Black Prince. Renamed Alfred, she was the first continental ship to have a Grand Union Flag raised on board (by Lt. John Paul Jones) at her commissioning in Philadelphia, on Dec. 3, 1775. Artwork by W.
