A Holloman High Speed Test Track crew secures Lt. Col. John Stapp into the “Sonic Wind No. 1” rocket sled at Holloman Air Force Base, New Mexico. It was at the HHSTT that Stapp earned the title of “Fastest Man on Earth.” During a launch on Dec. 10, 1954, a sled ridden by Stapp traveled at a speed of 632 miles per hour. Stapp endured around 40 times the pull of the earth’s gravity. This ride broke the land speed record. This was among several records set at the HHSTT, and the test track’s history is one of the reasons the 846th Test Squadron, which operates the more-than-70-year-old facility, is exploring its modernization. The 846 TS is a unit of the 704th Test Group of the Arnold Engineering Development Complex, headquartered at Arnold Air Force Base, Tenn. (U.S. Air Force photo)
