Brig. Gen. Joane Mathews, Task Force McCoy commanding general, and other U.S. Army Soldiers welcome an Afghan evacuee to the United States at Volk Field Air National Guard Base, Wisconsin, Oct. 11, 2021. After flying from Germany to Volk Field, Afghan evacuees were bused to Fort McCoy where they will begin the immigration process. The Department of Defense, through U.S. Northern Command, and in support of the Department of Homeland Security, is providing transportation, temporary housing, medical screening, and general support for at least 50,000 Afghan evacuees at suitable facilities, in permanent or temporary structures, as quickly as possible.
