Sgt. First Class Erik Barrientos loves opportunities to incorporate Mexican traditions. As part of a "Trunk-O-Treat" in 2016, Barrientos and his family displayed their trunk as an "Ofendra," a decorated altar in homes to welcome the spirits for Dia de los Muertos, Day of the Dead.
Barrientos says celebrating Dia de los Muertos is a joyous time and traditions include food, flowers, visits with family members, prayers, and stories about those who have passed. According to Barrientos, part of the Mexican tradition includes a visit the cemeteries, decorating the graves and spending time there, in the presence of deceased family members in order to guide the spirits of the departed loved ones in the afterlife.
