NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (Oct. 13, 2021) - Capt. Brent Gaut, center, commanding officer of the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73), cuts a cake to celebrate the Navy’s 246th birthday with Culinary Specialist 3rd Class Margaret Varela, left, assigned to supply department and Senior Chief Hospital Corpsman Paul Duncan, the departmental leading chief petty officer of medical department. George Washington is undergoing refueling complex overhaul (RCOH) at Newport News Shipbuilding. RCOH is a multi-year project performed only once during a carrier’s 50-year service life that includes refueling the ship’s two nuclear reactors, as well as significant repairs, upgrades, and modernization.
