Oahu resident, Kapono Aluli Souza, blows into a ceremonial conch shell initiating the “carrying of the Lono” part of the “Makahiki” traditional ceremony held aboard, Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Oct. 19, 2021. “Makahiki” is the Hawaiian new year and season of peace, which incorporates the carrying of the “Lono”, starting at Makapu Peninsula, home of MCBH.
