During a ceremony commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Tomb of the Unknown at Roger Meunier Pier in Le Havre, France, Oct. 25, 2021, a plaque with the inscription in French “To the memory of an unknown American Soldier who died for France parted from Havre aboard the USS Olympia on 25 October 1921” was unveiled. For a century and counting, the Tomb stands as a people’s memorial that inspires reflection on service, valor and sacrifice.
