U.S. Embassy Acting Deputy Chief of Mission David Gamble, joined by Joint U.S. Military Assistance Group-Philippines staff, visited the Armed Forces of the Philippines Victoriano Luna Hospital touring the molecular laboratory of the U.S. Army Medical Directorate - Armed Forces Research Institute of Medical Sciences (USAMD-AFRIMS). The joint AFPMC-DOD AFRIMS molecular laboratory in the Philippines was formally inaugurated on 30 March 2011 by the Secretary of National Defense, Voltaire T. Gazmin, and the U.S. Ambassador, Harry K. Thomas, Jr. The lab serves as a reference laboratory for the testing of emerging and re-emerging diseases for the nation-wide hospital system of the Armed Forces of the Philippines. The facility played a crucial role in identifying early COVID-19 cases within the AFP at the start of the pandemic.
