The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers installs temporary roofing, or Blue Roofs, on a low-income apartment building in New Orleans Oct. 24. In total USACE installed Blue Roofs on 90 buildings at four sites within the greater New Orleans area. This was a special request approved through the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the state of Louisiana and is equivalent to installing more than 300 blue roofs on individual homes.
The USACE Operation Blue Roof program aims to provide homeowners in disaster areas with fiber-reinforced sheeting to cover their damaged roofs until permanent repairs are made. This program is a free service to homeowners and protects property, reduces temporary housing costs, and allows residents to remain in their homes while recovering from a storm.
