A U.S. Navy F/A-18E Super Hornet with Strike Fighter Squadron 195 tests an M-31 Expeditionary Arresting Gear System during Exercise Active Shield at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan, Oct. 28, 2021. Arrested landing operations are designed to ensure aircraft land safely during flight operations on short runways, such as landing on short plane carriers and runways. Exercise Active Shield, conducted annually, is designed to better prepare the station to quickly and safely carry out incident response procedures during base defense operations.
