This past summer Idaho Army National Guard Spc. Roy Barrera took time off from the stress and demands of guard duty to relax - hurtling down a straight stretch of concrete pavement between 165 to 170 miles per hour, perched on the seat of a motorcycle.
Over the summer Idaho Army National Guard Spc. Roy Barrera took time off from the stress and demands of guard duty to relax - hurtling down a straight stretch of sizzling concrete pavement at speeds in excess of 150 mph while crouched on the seat of a motorcycle.
Since the age of 13, Barrerra has been drag racing motorcycles. While serving in the Army National Guard sometimes limits his participation in regional competitions, within Idaho Barrera has built a championship reputation. Roy Barrera and his father Roy Sr. , a 26-year veteran of the Idaho Army National Guard, put in many more hours maintaining and building their machines. Its an off-duty pursuit that brings Barrera a great deal of satisfaction.
“ I get excited at the fact that we build our own engines and motorcycles, “ said Barrera. He said they fabricate most of the parts and equipment on every machine. Barrera says the maintenance required to successfully compete in races requires at least four hours of work every evening for the week prior to any race. Racing under the banner of Fly Racing Street, his sponsor, he races locally at Firebird raceway in Eagle, just south of Emmett, Idaho and into Washington, Oregon and Montana when the opportunity allows. Driving long hours to race for mere seconds.
Barrera said his support network - his mom, dad, his dad’s wife Christine, his girlfriend Danelle, Don and Brenda Lamott, Miles and Amy Hauer and Nick Hande have made a herculean effort in emotional and logistical support that has made his success possible.
Barrera is motivated to compete and likely just one of the reasons he won the Idaho Army National Guard’s Best Warrior competition in 2019. He is now in training with the 204th Regional Training
