Recovery Operations in Nghe An Province, Vietnam

Caroline Fine, scientific recovery expert (SRE) with the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) uses a total station to layout the excavation area, during recovery operations in Nghe An province, Socialist Republic of Vietnam, Oct. 29, 2021. Fine is conducting her first excavation with DPAA and is being mentored by Willa Trask, another SRE with DPAA. DPAA team members deployed to the area in hopes of recovering the remains of a missing service member from the Vietnam War. DPAA’s mission is to achieve the fullest possible accounting for missing and unaccounted-for U.S. personnel to their families and our nation. Since 1973, the remains of more than 1,000 Americans killed during the Vietnam War have been identified and returned to their families for burial with full military honors and 1,584 are still missing.
